Eating in Beijing ranges from the simple street stand, to the small family owned and run restaurant, to the big imported chains which are now springing up all over. The restaurants listed on this page are only the ones we have personally visited, are good value for money, with outstanding quality of food. A lot are either hard to distinguish from the guide books or are simple Chinese places which you'd never find in a western guide book. When visiting most genuine Chinese restaurants in Beijing like those listed below, you ought to know what to order. Ordering for the most part is a daunting process for most foreign visitors. Our guide, we hope, will afford you some help. More ... To us we consider restaurants where 2 people can eat a hearty meal for between 30 RMB - 90 RMB. These places are just known through word of mouth and location. The quality of food can vary from awful to exceptional. The cleanliness and hygiene ranges from appalling to poor. We here at Beijing Travel Tips draw the line at too much food on the floor under the table, and the presence of any kind of rodent. We're kinda' ok with cockroaches as even the very best restaurants in Beijing are likely to have a few. Eating at these restaurants may give some people slight stomach trouble, but it is unlikely to last too long. If you are a hardened traveler or eater of exotic foods it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Foreigners who relocate to China adapt to this within 1 month of continuously eating the food. Language will be an issue in these restaurants so bring our Chinese Food Guide, an interpreter or your best sign language. More ... At the mid-range restaurant level 2 people can eat a good meal for between 90 RMB - 190 RMB. In this category, the cleanliness and hygiene usually goes up considerably. The chances of picking up some stomach problem from these restaurants is much smaller. Furnishings will be more upscale and a little English might be spoken by the wait staff, or very elaborate English menus or picture menus. More ... The price range here is anything from 190 RMB - 400 RMB for a meal for 2 people. Even though extremely expensive by Beijing standards, if you convert this back to your local currency it is probably comparable to the price you'd pay at a normal restaurant back home. At this price level, the restaurant is likely to be very clean and all the staff likely have a very good level of English. Unfortunately, most of the restaurants in this category will likely not be serving Chinese food, but some other country's ethnic food. More ...
