Plenty of shopping to be had in Beijing now.  Mostly souvenirs, followed by rip-off designer ware, pirate dvds, fake Chinese antiques etc.  Reasonably priced electronics.  However, lack of standards require you to be very careful about what you buy.  The return policy is non-existent in 98% of stores so they make you try your purchase out extensively before you leave the store.  Credit cards are accepted in about 10% of stores but this situation is getting better as 2008 (Olympics year) approaches.

Main Shopping Areas

Wangfujing Street

Lots of different stores here including many selling souvenirs.  Prices not too bad, but some things can be found cheaper elsewhere. Full details ...

Xidan Area

Many large department stores selling good brand fixed price goods including electronic equipment like dvd players. Credit cards widely accepted for electronics and expensive items. Other malls selling cheap clothing with bargaining. Full details ...

Xiu Shui Jie Shopping Mall / Xiu Shui Market

Market-style shopping mall for tourists selling all kinds of clothing, bags, replica  designer labels etc.  All prices are negotiable so bargaining skills are essential. Full details ...

Hong Qiao Market

In the south central area of Beijing, this indoor market is popular with foreign students.  It is a good source of extremely cheap no-name or fake brand electronics, sunglasses, batteries, watches etc.  Bargaining also required.  Full details ...
Zhong Guan Cun Area

picture coming soon

Up in the north west corner of Beijing. Specializing in computer goods but split into many small stores most not speaking a word of English.  Go here just for amusement or if you want to buy an extremely cheap modem or pirate computer software.  Take an interpreter/guide.  Full details coming soon .....
Panjiayuan Jiu Huo Shichang

picture coming soon

Market selling Chinese antiques located in the south east of Beijing.  Lots of stuff here but 98% is a reproduced antique so only buy if you like the "look" of it, not for any "supposed" antique value. Bargaining essential.  Full details coming soon .....
